Fair enough... only it turns out this is a bit of an understatement. Among the known issues for this first developer preview are:

  • You cannot print
  • PDF export does not properly work as thetext won't show on the page right
  • Starting OpenOffice.org from a shared folder does not work
  • Copy and paste does not fully work
  • OpenOffice.org will crash after quitting
  • Some text is not drawn in places like Impress
  • Impress will not recognise multiple monitors

Having installed it last night however, I am still impressed. It's sort of like an OpenOffice shell at the moment. It looks like OpenOffice, it feels like OpenOffice... it just doesn't work like OpenOffice. The first thing I did was type "This is a test." The cursor moved, but no text appeared. Not the best start. I then carried on typing and (not actually being able to see what I was typing) quickly made a mistake. Upon doing so, the word was underlined in red and actually appeared! Well, part of it did at least.

Ok, so I can't type any new documents, but can I open an existing one? Well, with a bit more success yes. Most of what I have just opened is visible, however, double clicking the document in the finder just opened a blank one, I had to go to file/open.

With so many extremely basic features missing, it really isn't usable yet. However, it shows great promise, given a few more months we should finally have a native OpenOffice port for Mac OS X :D
